After the second successive band cancellation on Live From Studio 5!, it seemed like our beloved studio and its hosts may very well be on the verge of entering crisis mode. However, Minneapolis-based reggae band Dred I Dread swooped in just in the nick of time to simultaneously save the show and kick out an unstoppable torrent of pumped-up island grooves. Unraveling their innovated interpretation of the traditional reggae style, Dred I Dread successfully ended the Twin Cities rain-'n’-cold streak this week by reminding us that even we are worthy of an authentic slice of ocean-esque reggae jam.
In studio, Alex Cole tapped the keys with veteran prominence, guitarist Serdar Guvenc and bassist Paul Kammeyer provided some ultra-chill fretwork, drummer Rawle G provided an incessantly laid-back snare beat, and singer Pee Wee Dred demonstrated his soul-infused melodic chops.
The band has received a handful of awards within its existence, including “Best Local Reggae Band” by City Pages in 1999, and “Best Reggae Band in Minnesota” by members of the Minnesota Music Academy in both 2000 and 2001. Check out their website and an upcoming live performance, and prepare to feel a new sensation of relaxation overcome your delicate little collection of nerve endings, a feeling you might not've known since your roommate threw out that badass bean bag chair.
