There Are Simply No Words. RapeDoor, Everyone...

Salvation has arrived for the denizens of the Twin Cities who seriously dig absurdly righteous quirk punk/metal. What was birthed as a joke has slowly grown into a full-fledged performing musical act (possibly via Satanic umbilical cord) and is now the entity infamously known as RapeDoor. Comprised of hellhounds Nicole Jean Rowdy (drums & vocals), Odi “Black Jesus” (bass), Ron Q Rudlong (guitar), Jake Sweet (drums & guitar), this fearsome foursome brings unavoidably real punk and metal elements to both their sound and performance. Heavy, grinding guitars and a barrage of percussion are just a couple of their signature attributes as a band, not to mention a punk-as-f**k wardrobe choice that would make Johnny Rotten weep due to his inability to keep up.

Their lyrical content pertains to every mind-in-the-gutter subject you could possibly con-cock-t (see what I did there?), including staring at people’s breasts and taking s**ts in the kitchen sink. If you were the class clown in 4th grade, your retribution has finally come to pass. Despite all this, however, a lot about the band remains shrouded in mystery, so perhaps the only way to truly grab a feel for what the hell this band actually is would be to smoke some serious herb and observe their bizarre, yet mystifyingly awesome, mating ritual on stage.

The Bad Companions Are Anything But On "Live From Studio 5!"

Take some home-made rockabilly and season it with some Delta-blues lyricism, a lonely country kick, and a Johnny Cash travelin’ sincerity, and the end result would be the Bad Companions. These boys know how to bust out a fast-talking, hard-hitting jam with a vengeance, complete with perfectly placed stop times, cheeky vocals, and a cycle of instrumental spotlight time. The southern-esque guitar style, provided by string snappers / vocalists Dan Gaarder and Al Subola (Subola was nominated as best electric guitar player in the state by N Music Association) cruise parallel to drummer Frenchy Fremont’s rock-steady punch beat, both unwilling to let up until they sense a hint of weakness in the other (which, fortunately, never happens). Meanwhile, bassist Bill Keefe stands back and keeps the entire train steady to the track. If you want to see the Bad Companions live, simply step outside your front door, listen for the hordes of screaming fan girls/guys, and follow suit.

The Bad Companions recently released their newest album, 12 Bars. Check it out today!

Heavy and Heartbreaking, It's Nick Hensley

Singer / songwriter Nick Hensley graced Studio 5 this week with nothing more than an acoustic guitar, his stoic, growling voice, and a slew of original tunes hellbent on forcing you to lie down and deeply contemplate your life. His lyricism bears heavy nostalgic tones and self-aware philosophy, while his powerfully reaching voice brings to mind notes of grunge-rockers Eddie Vedder, Scott Weiland, and the late-great Kurt Cobain. As I sit writing and listening to him sing me an emotional tale on Sin City, I’d be lying if I wasn’t feeling a progressively growing urge to shed a tear and hug my mother. The beauty in Hensley’s songwriting is his relentlessly effective ability to make you stop whatever rat-race-esque task you’re currently working on and just f**king think about things for a moment, coated with a reminder that everything you care about can and will be gone someday. So whether he’s singing to you about Las Vegas, whiskey, or feeding his dog and mowing the lawn, if you want a dose of musical truth delivered via juggernaut vocals and driving acoustic strings, Nick Hensley is your man.

Be sure to check out Hensley’s album Love Songs For Angry Men, as well as his newest 2014 release.

From The Souls Of Your Shoes, It's Mark Lickteig

Ask anyone with a basic grasp on logic, and they’ll tell you that Mark Lickteig is to soul what Muhammed Ali is to knocking someone the f**k out. Equipped with a legion of legendary musicians, a voice worthy of wielding the Excalibur, and a beat that pulverizes any attempts to stop it, Mark Lickteig infiltrates your ears with a relentlessly desirable ferocity.

Influenced by the likes of Otis Redding, Albert King, Booker T & The MGs, James Brown and the like, Mark was brought up on the good stuff early and soon learned to hone the sound of soul as his own. After touring throughout the Midwest and the South with the group The Houserockers, Mark eventually set up shop in Minneapolis, where he played with a number of different bands, including Dr. Mambo’s Combo, The T.C. Jammers, Spark, and The Ruperts Orchestra. Recently, though, Mark proved that he was an equally hot item as a solo artist, releasing his first solo record, Workin’. This record delivers an all-you-can-eat amount of bright, brass-backed feel good anthems, greasy sax solos, everyman lyricism, some winding, snaky grooves, an ultra-punctual rhythm section lightly sprinkled with percolating keys and guitars, and a whole hell of a lot more. Again, ask anyone with a basic grasp on logic, and they’ll tell you that they already own two copies of this album.

Mark’s massive entourage consists of Lightning Joe on the Hammond Organ, Ali Washington on vocals, Ryan Butler on 5-string bass, Petar Janjic on drums, Joe Peterson on keyboards, Joe Elliot on guitar, Bob Hallgrimson on trumpet, Gus Van Sant on tenor sax, Gus Sandberg on baritone sax, and finally, Mark Lickteig on the Hammond B3, keyboards, and lead vocals.
