Spring Pledge Drive Disaster

Tom Lieberman
Dan Jass
It is with a heavy heart that I have to bring this subject up.  To prepare for Pledge Drive, the other Doug and I decided we’d go all out for the cause.  We took two days to contact each and every band through Facebook that’s ever been on our show, approximately 250 of them.  We uploaded the video we made for each of them and said it was time for them to show their support for the only local show that gave them a chance to present their talents to the world, actually.  We were very excited as showtime approached and we hit the ground running.  Yakking with four of our favorite musicians and having them play as well as playing some cuts from early L5 shows.  At the end of the show we tallied up:  ONE
This is how I get my cheap thrills
Ron Rudlong & Nicole Jean Rowdy
PLEDGE = FIVE DOLLARS??  The other Doug and I put in about
30 hours each & every week putting this show together.  Editing and uploading You Tube videos, Flickr Pix, editing and uploading our FOREVER archives, designing and printing posters, contacting and scheduling bands, editing previously segments just to name a few.  We work for nothing except satisfaction (as well as some personal self-aggrandizement) but lately we can’t get no satisfaction.  We actually put our own money into the show.  We buy headphones, blank disks, poster paper and ink, we bought those nice big L5 wall posters (on the top of this page) and twinkly lights since KFAI has no budget for that stuff.  Doug and I each bought cameras that only get used for the show.

Producer Dew Glass
We know U gotta be out there.  We’ve had 125,000 hits on our You  Tube channel.  With roughly 250 bands with about 4 members each, that’s about ONE THOUSAND people.  If each one gave a MEASLY FIVE DOLLARS we’d have $5,000.  I don’t think that’s axting too much.  On all those Facebook posts we got lots of LIKES but do you think anyone would like us enough donate five bucks??

Cher Dial

KFAI has at least a chance of making it, I can’t imagine listeners letting such a wonderful resource go dormant.  “Live From Studio 5!” though, is another matter.  If the program committee doesn’t yank us for under performing then I’m outta here, G-O-N-E gone.  I’m seriously totally DEMORALIZED and my health is in the toilet anyway.  I need to find a new career or just work in my garden all Summer.  Zero stress on my ticker.
Now if this whiny sob story doesn’t loosen your heart strings and your purse strings then I’m just talking to a brick wall.  So PLEEEEESE click here and donate something.  You can use a credit card or select bill me later or even pick up the phone and call 612-375-9030.  Make sure you tell ‘em it’s for “Live From Studio 5!”

THANK YOU!

The Tim Malloys Get All Sorts of Irish in Studio 5!

Just in time for the drunkest day of the year, The Tim Malloys invaded Studio 5! this week, bearing a relentless barrage of Irish / Scottish punk rock and intoxicated chanting, brought on by five personalities more dynamic than Cher’s wardrobe. Sporting an array of neat instruments, like the Bodhran (a traditional Irish rim drum drum), Italian guitars, tin whistle, accordion, and a badder-than-badass flute, the Tim Malloy’s happy-go-lucky, pub crawling sound is the perfect accompaniment for any alcohol-themed get together, a night of rambunctious mischief, or basically any occasion existing under the sun.

Consisting of Tom Delaney and John Sjogren / vocalist on guitar, Scott Schwister on the kit, bassist / vocalist Neal Johnston, and flautist / tin whistler Kirstin Johnston, the group is currently on its 21st year (pretty appropriate, eh?) of dominating all things musical, having tried their first beer and written their first jam in 1994. Continuing to blend rock and chant elements, traditional instruments, affable merry-making, and the pure love for a hell of a good time, The Tim Malloys seem to be on an eternally steadfast track at making sure no one leaves the room without a buzz-induced smile and a serendipitous spring in their step. Forever chant their rally cry: “Something whiskey this way comes”.

Harakiri Define The Progressive Paragon In Studio 5!

Ritual suicide will be farthest from one’s mind whilst Harakiri begins their righteous penetration of your once-innocent ear. Combining nearly every imaginable genre under the sun to birth a consequential orgasm of sound, Harakiri appears to be the prodigal son of all things cool, new, and awesomely weird. The band swims between prog-rock unpredictably, metal intensity, soul-man crooning, and even neo-jazzy subtlety, while their lyrics and song titles reference everything from beloved 50’s sitcoms to being lost in space. The vocals of frontman Jordan Manus call to mind a Kurt Cobain sadness, an Otis Redding hum, and, perhaps most impressively, a soaring Freddie Mercury roar, amplified by the soul-piercing harmonies of Alexa Blake and Summer Furreal. Meanwhile, axe-men Geoff Davidson and Ethan Elseth, bassist Devon Cook, and kit-hitter Pieter Ochsman provide a rhythm section more rhythmically punctual than an adrenalized brain surgeon.

Born and bred in Saint Paul, Harakiri have gone on multiple nation-wide tours, endured handfuls of line-up alterations, and debuted a plethora of musical releases along the way, the latest being their self-titled release in 2014. Aside from performing new material and their music video-accompanied tune “Lorelei” in Studio 5, Manus commented on the heptad’s new material:
“It’s evolved into a more concrete sound, a focused sound. We tend to hop genres, and the new stuff has more integrity.”

The group also mentioned that they drew inspiration from such figureheads as The Mars Volta, Yes, The Doors, Nirvana, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, and even Muddy Waters and Frank Sinatra while writing original material.

Toying with time signature like a pile of Legos and blending righteous melancholy and bellicose cool with dark innovation at their helm, Harakiri’s sound will comfortably grip listeners by the throat and plunge them into a simultaneous world of accelerating darkness, perceptible bawdiness, prevailing optimism, and a sense of atmospheric panorama. The bottom line is this: If you’d like to take your head for a f**king ride, check out this band.
