Chad Erickson and The Untimely On Live From Studio 5!

Live From Studio 5! featured the grungy, alt-rock stylings of Chad Erickson, a Minneapolis-based singer-song writer with a knack for angst rock and tongue-in-cheek mannerisms. Though Chad was not accompanied by The Untimely during this performance, his presence with simply an acoustic guitar and his voice is undeniably powerful, bearing his gravelly, soaring vocals, furious strumming, and relentlessly honest lyrics. A few cuts off of Chad’s debut album with The Untimely, Moments In Motion, provided us with his full-band comparison, which was equally as driving, with a plethora of new hard-rock elements to relish.

Chad graced the studio crew with his ever-catchy tune “Buy The Ticket”, which was featured last year on the City Pages’ Top Ten, the song’s accompanying video even being featured in an under ground music festival. “Generic Song in G” and “The Spaces in Between” were two more comfortingly sorrowful numbers performed for the studio last night. Chad and his band have been active for nearly two years now, forming in late January of last year. Although Chad mentioned that there is no concrete line-up for the Untimely (stating that he literally invited anyone he knew to come in to the studio and record with him), a few recurring members include David Wichterman on guitar, Cory Duna on keys, Joe Boelke and David Morabito on bass, and Sam Butler and Thom Schonborn on drums.

The Oddfathers Turn It Up Way Past 11 On "Live From Studio 5!"

This Wednesday’s airing shed even more light on the very young, yet already very revered four-piece “The Oddfathers”, who describe themselves as “new classic rock”. The band is comprised of Brynn Arens on vocals and guitar, Casey Gooby on lead guitar and vocals, Chris Baratto on bass guitar and vocals, and Tom Cook on drums and vocals, all of whom are contributing songwriters.
Each member is a veteran of the Minneapolis music scene, and they came together only ten months ago to form the self-proclaimed “oldest new rock band”, The Oddfathers. Each member has had their previous share of success: Lead singer Brynn Arens made Flipp a household word and garage band throughout the Twin Cities in the 90’s, drummer Tom Cooke has toured the world with the renowned group The Magnolias, bassist Krys Barrato was stage left for several bands on the Sunset Strip during the 90’s, and lead guitarist Casey Gooby’s own business, Goody Amps, does guitar repair and restoration for several players worldwide.

Within two days of their very first jam session, the band had written 10 songs, four of which were subsequently recorded at Terrarium Studios in Minneapolis for their debut release, Double Live 45. Due to an impressive live performance and a music video to accompany “Whisper In My Ear” (one of the four songs cut for Double Live 45), the Oddfathers have already gained a loyal following throughout the Twin Cities within their short time together.

Their name is even beginning to spread beyond the Land of 10,000 Lakes. Arens sent out their cassette (which he glued inside of a tape player) and sent it out to a slew of rock magazines, as well as legendary producers Jack Douglas and Eddie Kramer, both of which made a multitude of enthusiastic comments about the up-and-coming classic rockers. As if that weren’t star-striking enough, a few of the group’s recent live shows included opening for rock-juggernauts Nazareth, Cowboy Mouth, and Night Ranger.

The band will be heading back into the studio with Douglas soon to record songs that will end up on their upcoming debut full-length album. They also have a KISS tribute album in the works, having recently recorded a version of their classic "Let Me Go (Rock & Roll)".

AiVry Rocks The Faces Off of "Live From Studio 5!" Crew

AiVry

AiVry, the power-trio straight out of Minneapolis, stopped in to rock the faces of the “Live From Studio 5!” gang last night, as well as each one of their listeners. The groovin’ trifecta jammed out their newest single, as well as a few old-school tunes from their musical repertoire. The group’s sound seems to blend 90’s alternative rock stylings with a gritty, dirtier edge, alternating between happier, upbeat melodies, and low-down, abrasive freestyle jams. The band consists of Matt McClosky on vocals and bass, Hunter Cohen on guitar, and Derek Pfeifer on drums.

AiVry, having been together for barely a year, formed last summer in 2013, after Matt McCloskey teamed up with Derek and Hunter in August of last year. On May 2nd, they released their self-titled EP, which has received mentions on the Current’s blog and is currently being considered for radio play. The EP was recorded at Above The Bridge Records at Michigan State University, and includes the songs In The Street, Mr. Taylor, and Auburn. A few of the group's influences include Kurt Cobain, Billy Joel, Foo Fighters, John Mayer, Rage Against The Machine, Death Cab For Cutie, and more.

Provided below is a link to AiVry’s Bandcamp page, featuring their entire EP:

The Piñata Hearts Drop In To Promote New Self-Titled Album

Minneapolis-based indie band Piñata Hearts dropped in at “Live From Studio 5!” last night to jam out a few tunes and promote their recently released self-titled album, The Piñata Hearts. They even played their own improv “KFAI Theme Song”.

The group describes themselves as “piano-driven indie pop”, which features male and female co-ed vocals. The members consist of Allison Achterkirch on vocals, piano and keys, Chris Lunceford on vocals and guitar, Johnny O on bass guitar, and Brian Dwinal on drums and percussion.

Allison and Chris founded the group back in 2005, in Tampa, Florida. The next year, the duo moved to the Twin Cities, but continued to perform in both markets. In 2008, Johnny O and Brian Dwinal added to the lineup, and since then, The Piñata Hearts have released two albums: Tampa Wadena in 2011, and Give in 2012. Their third and most recent album,The Piñata Hearts, was presented at their CD Release Show earlier this month, on September 18th at the Turf Club. They played the show with Curtiss A, The Soul, and The Ale Grande Band.

The band familiarizes their sound to the likes of Yo La Tengo, Pixies, The Kinks, The Replacements, Guided By Voices, and more.

Be sure to check out The Piñata Hearts’ new record, The Piñata Hearts.
