Minneapolis-based indie band Piñata Hearts dropped in at “Live From Studio 5!” last night to jam out a few tunes and promote their recently released self-titled album, The Piñata Hearts. They even played their own improv “KFAI Theme Song”.
The group describes themselves as “piano-driven indie pop”, which features male and female co-ed vocals. The members consist of Allison Achterkirch on vocals, piano and keys, Chris Lunceford on vocals and guitar, Johnny O on bass guitar, and Brian Dwinal on drums and percussion.
Allison and Chris founded the group back in 2005, in Tampa, Florida. The next year, the duo moved to the Twin Cities, but continued to perform in both markets. In 2008, Johnny O and Brian Dwinal added to the lineup, and since then, The Piñata Hearts have released two albums: Tampa Wadena in 2011, and Give in 2012. Their third and most recent album,The Piñata Hearts, was presented at their CD Release Show earlier this month, on September 18th at the Turf Club. They played the show with Curtiss A, The Soul, and The Ale Grande Band.
The band familiarizes their sound to the likes of Yo La Tengo, Pixies, The Kinks, The Replacements, Guided By Voices, and more.
