Jezebel Jones and Friends Get Up Close, Personal, and Instrumentally Innovative in Studio 5

After 3 long years spent in the Lone Star State, Jezebel Jones finally returned to the Twin Cities last Wednesday to share her serendipitously solemn vibes with the Studio 5 crew. Joined by her singer-songwriter friends Bruce Springsteen look-alike, Jeff Crandall of Swallows and Phillip Westfall aka Blood Brother (Phillip alongside his own homemade instrument, no less), Jezebel emitted tales concerning her travels, the enigma of death, a romance with whiskey (who can’t relate to that?), and a hell of a lot more. She displayed a vivacious versatility by sifting between bright, upbeat rhythms and melodies to creeping, emotion-stuffed ballads, the story beneath each number as captivating as the last.

The entire set was a series of dynamics in itself. Between three different singers and their distinguished styles taking their turn at the mic’s helm, Phillip displayed his personal instrumental creation, an electric banjo-esque guitar complete with drum triggers and some intricate inputs, which made for serious one-man band action.

Jezebel released her first full-length album, Queen Of The Devil’s Rodeo, back in November of 2011, and it’s available on her website. She has since made the move from Austin, Texas to Seattle, Washington, so, unfortunately, it won’t be often that you’ll see her strolling the streets of Minneapolis. However, when she does return, this writer strongly urges you to catch a glimpse of her musical prowess the soonest instant that you can.

Dred I Dread Drops The Beat In Studio 5

After the second successive band cancellation on Live From Studio 5!, it seemed like our beloved studio and its hosts may very well be on the verge of entering crisis mode. However, Minneapolis-based reggae band Dred I Dread swooped in just in the nick of time to simultaneously save the show and kick out an unstoppable torrent of pumped-up island grooves. Unraveling their innovated interpretation of the traditional reggae style, Dred I Dread successfully ended the Twin Cities rain-'n’-cold streak this week by reminding us that even we are worthy of an authentic slice of ocean-esque reggae jam.

In studio, Alex Cole tapped the keys with veteran prominence, guitarist Serdar Guvenc and bassist Paul Kammeyer provided some ultra-chill fretwork, drummer Rawle G provided an incessantly laid-back snare beat, and singer Pee Wee Dred demonstrated his soul-infused melodic chops.

The band has received a handful of awards within its existence, including “Best Local Reggae Band” by City Pages in 1999, and “Best Reggae Band in Minnesota” by members of the Minnesota Music Academy in both 2000 and 2001. Check out their website and an upcoming live performance, and prepare to feel a new sensation of relaxation overcome your delicate little collection of nerve endings, a feeling you might not've known since your roommate threw out that badass bean bag chair.

Maria Isa Provides Studio 5 With Some Earth Shattering Grooves

Maria Isa graced Studio 5 this weekend with her Latina-soulful-Bomba style, which embodied diligently smooth melodies, syncopated rap segments, and an armada of percussion and synth-y sounds. Having shared the mighty stage with giants like Atmosphere, Slick Rick, The Roots, Ghostface Killah, Brother Ali, Semisonic, and more, it’s no secret that Maria is no secret to the music scene that is rapidly developing around us. Maria’s voice is one of hinted intensity; a voice that commands the attention but, once commanded, caresses it with the gentle hand of both sincerity and poetic integrity.

Accompanying her in the studio last Wednesday, her band dubbed “The Fellas”, included DJ Tony Trouble, rappers Mike the Martyr and Muja Messiah, Charlie Keys on the keys themselves, and Truth Mays, applying some serious sound to a pair of congas.

As if being an ultra-cool Latin vocalist weren’t enough, Maria is also involved in film, acting, songwriting, amongst other things, like having organized several walk-a-thons and fundraisers to help raise awareness for juvenile diabetes. Her shortened musical description is as follows: “Mix beat street with drops of Purple Rain”. The way things look now, it seems like Maria Isa may very well have the Purple Rain influence bearing down on the Twin Cities, and beyond, for quite some time.
