Of Ice cream, Chocolate and the 99ers

The 99ers on "Live From Studio 5!"

Media seems to need to label everything in a nice tight package.
1CASEY2X600
"Live From Studio 5!" and Casey Moo fell into that a bit.
The explanation, if one is needed, comes from the band itself.
The band name is based on a dessert that has to do with ice cream and chocolate.
It does not hurt that the name coincides with the occupy movement.
Surf Punk, well OK, just imagine the Beach Boys coming up during the rise of punk, throw in some sprinkles of rockabilly, cheeky lyrics, and stir.
99 ers 012
I liked the opening song about our summers here in the north land, celebrating our unofficial state bird, the mosquito.
99 ers 01399 ers 01499 ers 01599 ers 016
I do have a favorite song, Godzilla’s a punk, and careful though, if he finds out about it, there could be a sequel here in the Twin Cities.
The songs were fast-rockin', high-energy, foot stompin' examples of, in a word, great fun.
The 99ers are, Steve Shannon on Guitar and vocals, Eric John on guitar and vocals, Doug Heeschen on bass and Christopher Mark is the drummer.
You probably won’t meet a more fun bunch of yahoos anywhere.  So fan them, and go see them whenever they are playing.
SparkSpark, their brand new CD is available, so search it out.  Caution; the first cut might piss off Godzilla.  Spark is packed with 16 songs so no musical stone has been left unturned.

Michael Ray and The Nasty Notes

Michael Ray Brought his version of Americana music to "Live From Studio 5!"
Michael ray 005

The band goes by the name of Michael Ray & The Nasty Notes but only had one Nasty Note with him, Curt Hutchens.
Michael ray 006
The sound coming from Curt’s guitar, was far from nasty.  Curt and Michael blended well and gave us an excursion through their new album, The Higher You Climb.
 Michael ray 020
It was surprising to find that just two guitars and a little tower amp filled the studio.
There was even an old standard, Oh Suzanna, remade on the nasty notes forge.
Combining great pickin' with storytelling, and you have the makings of a great sound.

Michael even brought out something for dog lovers, Dirty Old Dog.
There was also a rockin' rendition of Hotel Sadie, that had me smelling barbeque.
I can’t wait to see them as a full band.  Go see them whenever you can.
The Nasty Notes are working on fleshing out the band, so expect to hear even more amazing things from this band.

Stacy Lee on “Live From Studio Five!”

By Brian P. Rubin

Singer-songwriter Stacy Lee dropped by “Live From Studio Five!” last Wednesday and played a set of great music with some of her friends and musical collaborators. She was joined in studio by Doug the Thug, Dewglass, and Cher Dial, making her triumphant return to the show.

Lee played a number of songs off her album Face the Day – songs like “Undefined,” “Won,” “Unseen,” and “The Craziness.” She also played a cover of N’Sync’s “Bye Bye Bye,” as well as one of her newest tunes, the first one she’d written since recording her album. Called “One More Day,” the song had a lot of personal meaning for her.

“I’ve had personal experience with depression,” Lee explained. “And if it’s not caught soon enough, it can be very devastating. This song stems from my experiences with people that I know that struggle with it.”

Stacy Lee is playing this coming Saturday, May 24, at Honey in Northeast Minneapolis, and then will be appearing at the Aster Café on Wednesday, May 28. Two Weeks at the Nomad World Pub on "Live From Studio Five!"

By Brian P. Rubin

Breakfast Anytime Breakfast Anytime
The last two weeks have been crazy busy on “Live From Studio Five!” For two consecutive Wednesdays, the gang put on two live shows featuring six different bands. There was a mix of tragedy and triumph, as the live shows at the Nomad World Pub were great—but unfortunately, a large segment of the first night’s performance two weeks ago went unaired due to some insurmountable technical hiccups.

But Dewglass held down the fort at the studio back on Cedar Riverside and kept each show rolling along. He performed more than admirably considering the live feed kept cutting out! Meanwhile, at the Nomad, Doug the Thug was joined by Nicole Jean Rode and Cher Dial, who MC’d each night’s performances.

Six bands played—six! On Wednesday, April 30, the show featured Hot Cellars, Breakfast Anytime, and Hot Cellars. A week later on May 7, the show featured the Lost Wheels, the Dirt Road Ramblers, and Bouncer Fighter. It was a diverse lineup, and hopefully the recordings of those live shows will make their way to air sometime soon. In the meantime, make sure to check out the above video of Dirt Road Ramblers, not to mention the mountains of photos taken at the shows.

Things are back to Studio Five at KFAI tonight, so be sure to tune in from 10 p.m. to midnight to hear the music of Stacy Lee. And check back here on the blog to find out how the show went later this week. You never know what’s going to happen on “Live From Studio Five!” And that’s what makes it so great.
